Wempe branch office New York Fifth Avenue Managing Director Rüdiger Albers with the words Happy 30th, Rudy!

40 Years of Wempe New York Fifth Avenue, 30 Years of Rudy at the helm

The 40th anniversary of our Fifth Avenue flagship coincides with the 30th anniversary of Rüdiger “Rudy” Albers as the store’s general manager. Over the past 30 years, Rudy has been above all one thing: an authentic mixture of European precision and American candor. He is the backbone of the corporate culture at Wempe New York.

Up and Away to New York

As a young master watchmaker Rudy saw an ad posted by Wempe, with the possibility of moving to New York. A year later, in 1987, he started to work as sales consultant at Wempe on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Only three years after that, Rüdiger Albers became store manager. He was 27 years old and by then the store’s top salesman. Rudy hired trained jewelers, gemologists and watchmakers to work the floor to make sure that Wempe customers always have an expert at their side.

We Made It There.

In 1991, the store moved across the street from its original location. In 2016, Wempe doubled its sales area in the freshly renovated landmark Peninsula Hotel and now occupies 5,500 square feet with half a city block of frontage on Fifth Avenue. The Wempe New York store counts among the top retailers in its category in the United States. Regular customers include Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro and Scarlett Johansson.

The Secret of Success

Is there a key to success? According to Rudy, it’s not as simple as that. “It’s a puzzle, with many small pieces, that make a great store,” says Rudy. “It goes beyond location and assortment. It’s first and foremost our steady team, without whom this success would not have been possible. It’s the vibe, the sense of positivity you feel the moment you enter and the sincerity throughout your visit. My learning curve is never ending, which makes it so exciting!” We are thus curious to see what the future will bring and say thank you Rudy for the last 30 years.

Visit our New York store and meet our team. We are looking forward to welcoming you.
